The Mashrabiya Veil

A mashrabiya — the turned-cedar lattice through which the women of a Moroccan house once watched the street unseen — is lifted from its wall and hung with the red and cream pompoms of a village wedding. It is held before the face like a second veil, so that the wearer looks out exactly as the house's women once did: present, and hidden.
